The Why And What Of Client Development Training For Associates

Developing the Next Generation of Rainmakers The Why and What of Client Development Training for Associates I will be doing a client development for associates webinar with LexBlog’s  Kevin O’Keefe tomorrow at Noon Eastern Time. It will be fun, in part because it will be interactive. Instead of a PowerPoint presentation, I  will be answering questions from the participants. If you want to learn more about it and sign up, read  LexBlog Network Webinar : Client Development for Associates with Cordell Parvin.   I recently read a David Rock article describing considerable research on the brain’s role in both learning and performance. They have found that we have both a “hard wired” part of our brain and a “working memory” part of our brain. For the learning and training to be effective, we must seek to move it from the working memory part of our brain to the hard wired part of our brain. In a nutshell, what does this scientific information mean? Your associates may be “hard wired” to get their hours. But, they are not hard wired to develop their profile as a “go-to” lawyer and build relationships with contacts and clients. Your associates know that to be a successful partner, they must build a book of business and most of them want to do it. Yet, they never get started, in part because they do not know where to start. Does your firm wait until your lawyers become partners to begin their client development training? By then, it is more difficult to learn, develop and implement client development activities and the learning curve is not reduced. So, I encourage you to begin client development training for your lawyers as soon as they arrive at your law firm. Your client development training for associates should be in bite sized pieces, not in big chunks. The idea is to have them learn and implement what they have learned before moving on to something else. Begin by simply teaching them how to plan their non-billable time and help them identify the client development tools they can use. When teaching them, get your associates to focus on client development ideas and solutions, not on the problems they have to overcome to do client development. To the extent possible, let them come to their own answers. As David Rock points out, studies have shown that when people experience an “ah ha” moment on their own there is a sudden adrenaline energy rush that is conducive to making changes. Finally, training by itself will not likely be successful. However, training with follow-up implementation along with mentoring or coaching will way more likely be successful. So, get your best client development mentors involved in your associate training.   I practiced law for 37 years developing a national construction law practice representing some of the top highway and transportation construction contractors in the US.

The One Thing You Need to Look for in Your Next Job The One Thing You Need to Look for in Your Next Job Meeting with a CEO? 10 Tough Questions and Answers Great pioneers are not only a decent thing to have in the working environment. Having a decent initiative group at the association you work for is basic to your experience there. Great pioneers have the ability to drastically influence the fulfillment, work-life equalization, and by and large profession possibilities of their representatives. Another Glassdoor study , for instance, found that representative fulfillment is reliably a high indicator of CEO endorsement evaluations. Furthermore, the examination found that increasingly beneficial organizations have higher CEO endorsement evaluations, in any event, when variables like industry size and friends size were controlled for. That implies when a CEO is progressing nicely, the organization is probably going to progress admirably, which is consistently a help for representatives. Genuine pioneers can't generally be spotted immediately. Solid pioneers not generally the most intense voices in the room, and in some cases it is really the self observers in an association who are the most grounded powers in the executives. One approach to distinguish solid pioneers is through assessment of their way to deal with correspondence. Ditty Bowser, the leader of Conflict Management Strategies Inc. , reveals to Glassdoor that it's important that an administration group present a firm and clear message. The focal point of pioneers is regularly outer, as they fill in as the essences of an association. Thus, how well the authority or official group can reliably and obviously convey what should be done and what they are searching for to exhibit achievement is significant, says Bowser. Solid initiative can likewise be checked with Glassdoor surveys and evaluations. The senior administration rating, culture and qualities rating, CEO endorsement rating, and prescribe to a companion rating, alongside different measurements and audits, would all be able to give an image of the express that an organization's initiative is in. What's more, planning a visit with anybody you can converse with inside the organization about how they see the organization's administration, just as doing a jump into ongoing news stories about the organization, can give you important insight on what the initiative atmosphere resembles there. Working at an organization with solid administration can give important exercises and encounters to your profession. Also, Hurwitz focused on that great tutors are basic for building a solid system. A decent coach will open their arrange up to a mentee, permitting them to associate with other accommodating people in the business and eventually develop their own little dark book. Meetings are a two-way process. While the questioner is attempting to survey your fit for the job and for the organization, it's significant during a meeting for you to check how you'll fit into the organization's way of life, and how the organization's administration will influence your regular work understanding. There are various inquiries you can pose to that will assist you with bettering Pose inquiries that originate from a position of interest, not judgment, exhorts Bowser. You are being employed for your cerebrum and capacity to execute undertakings. Get some information about the interchange between the position you are meeting for and the administration group. Will there be cooperations? Will your chief be a guardian? In what capacity will you and your group be seen as effective by the initiative group? Since great initiative is such a significant piece of being fulfilled and effective at your particular employment, it's basic to keep an eye out for administration warnings when you're meeting at organizations. Do some examination â€" does there appear to be agitate at the top or stir underneath? says Bowser. An association that can't keep great individuals in light of the fact that the senior individuals have helpless abilities is a major warning. A low culture and qualities rating on Glassdoor, a high turnover rate, or a low senior administration rating would all be able to be signs that the organization's initiative isn't performing acceptable. While there are numerous variables you ought to consider when taking an occupation, for example, open doors for professional success, pay, area, accommodation, and the sky is the limit from there, a solid administration group is a major factor that you would prefer not to lament neglecting to consider.

Discrimination is Alive and Well - Workology

Discrimination is Alive and Well Discrimination is Alive and Well I don’t expect many of you to be aware, but there was an incident in Paris involving fans of Chelsea, an English soccer team, after they played Paris Saint Germain several weeks ago. Video has emerged of three Chelsea fans preventing a black man from entering a metro train while chanting “We’re racist, we’re racist and that’s the way we like it.” Discrimination is Alive and Well I use this disgusting example as a reminder that, while we would all like to believe that things were different, discrimination is still alive and well in the world. I am certainly not suggesting that we should not strive for a better world, where equality truly exists. However, we should not be blind to the issues that exist. I’m well aware of the eye-rolling that goes on when employee training programs are suggested or conducted. After all, its 2015, why do we need to sit through hours of some boring lawyer listing off all of the obvious things that violate the law. Training exists for a reason. While it certainly helps to reduce your liability, it also helps to reinforce behavior. Most employees probably do not necessarily need to be told that using a racial slur is not permitted. We use wild situations and clear answers to try to make our training programs less boring, and to catch employees’ attention. However, by using an overt, clear example, we also hope that employees will use good judgment in more subtle and difficult situations. We can’t cover every difficult or subtle situation in a training program, otherwise it would take hours and hours to go over every different possible situation. It may not always be easy to convince those holding the purse strings to pay for employee training on discrimination and other employment law issues, but the recent events in Paris and other similar problems, highlight the need to reinforce non-discriminatory behavior. .ai-rotate {position: relative;} .ai-rotate-hidden {visibility: hidden;} .ai-rotate-hidden-2 {position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%;} .ai-list-data, .ai-ip-data, .ai-fallback, .ai-list-block {visibility: hidden; position: absolute; width: 50%; height: 1px; z-index: -9999;}

How a month of paternity leave turned me into a competent dad

How a month of paternity leave transformed me into an equipped father How a month of paternity leave transformed me into an equipped father The accompanying story was presented by a Fatherly peruser. Sentiments communicated in the story don't mirror the assessments of Fatherly as a distribution. The way that we're printing the story does, in any case, mirror a conviction that it is a fascinating and advantageous read.Like numerous fathers, I didn't begin with the most supporting, or patient, way to deal with parenthood. From the very beginning, I cherished the small individual crying in my arms, yet attempt as I may, I was unable to satisfy her. What's more, the disappointment of battling at child rearing was choking. In time, I ended up conversing with her less like my kid and progressively like the contentious benefactor at a swarmed bar.Have you made sense of what you need yet? No? Ma'am, there's no compelling reason to shout.My spouse, then again, had the inverse child rearing experience. As it so happens, she knew precisely what should have been done in pretty much every circumstance ? from taking care of, to alleviating, to resting. Truth be told, she was such a great amount of better at getting our daughter to rest that it turned into her gig. What's more, that set an awful point of reference. At whatever point something turned out to be excessively hard in those early days, I let my significant other get a move on. Unmistakably, she had a type of developmental skill for the entirety of this, so on the off chance that I was unable to tackle the issue, Aw shucks, here ya go mom!I've conversed with a great deal of fathers who concede they fell into this equivalent snare. Numerous fathers are still in it. They figure, Hello, I cut the grass and ensure the correct batteries are in the entirety of the remotes; I do my fair share around here. It's a pleasant piec e of hallucination that is just exacerbated by a restless mind. I grasped this flawed rationale for a strong two months. I assumed the lower priority each open door I got. And keeping in mind that the blame of not helping pawed at me, the additional piece of rest helped.But it was all impermanent. It's just plain obvious, I'd made a significant duty some time before I realized how hard it is care for an infant. I had recorded the entirety of the administrative work and cleared my arrangements. Toward the finish of my significant other's maternity leave, I would dominate. For an entire month, I was going on paternity leave. What's more, I was certainly beginning to scrutinize my decision.The week before we did the switch I was a disaster area. I took a gander at my now 15-pound child young lady like she was a ticking delayed bomb. I realized she was simply holding back to go off and, obviously, would do as such on my watch. A tainted feline scratch? An unexpected recipe hypersensitiv ity? Her first episode of colic? A virus? Pneumonia? I was entirely not ready for any of these occasions however had enough sense to hush up about the dread. As futile as I'd been up to that point, I couldn't likewise be viewed as a whiner.The day came and the entryway shut behind my significant other. My infant and I were distant from everyone else. Also, very quickly she started to cry. The hairs on my neck got ready. My pulse multiplied. I'm certain there was a look of frenzy all over. Yet, I remained cool and alleviated my daughter, and before I knew it there was quiet. For a considerable length of time, it went this way; snapshots of wretched repulsiveness followed by complete, superb, calm. It was a mess of hellfire… and a tad of paradise. At that point somewhat less damnation. What's more, even less… As we folded into our subsequent week, my little hostile bar supporter was turning out to be increasingly similar to a high-tipping ordinary. The lows were still extremely lo w … yet the highs were all that anyone could need to compensate for the difficulty. At the point when my better half got back after working all day in the nighttimes, out of nowhere I didn't rush to hand over our little one. The polar opposite. You can go upstairs and change, I have her, I would state decisively. (Explanations like this, coincidentally, may have really spared me from having my belongings tossed out on the curb.)By the time my paternity leave finished (too early, I may include), I was beginning to feel like an old expert. I could wrap up as well as anyone. I knew, down to the second, to what extent the jugs should have been warmed. I had gotten the hang of child rearing stunts that even my significant other didn't have the foggiest idea. It felt better. Also, I was starting to enlist that the adages were genuine ? my little girl truly was growing up before my eyes.She was perceptibly not quite the same as when we began our month together. So was I. Also, I'd decide d through the span of the month that the rearward sitting arrangement was a bad situation for me when it came to raising her. The view was much better up front.Alex Moschina is a Baltimore-based essayist who appreciates investing energy outside with his significant other and daughter.This article previously showed up on Fatherly.

The same holds true for technology professionals who are in a constant struggle to not just excel in a hyper-competitive market but also stave off obsolescence by consistently upskilling themselves. Thats where Corporate Training comes in. Its a practical solution designed for todays employers and employees. There are two primary advantages that corporate training unlocks:Increase in productivity Training existing employees in new skills is more efficient and practical than hiring new individuals with those skills. The former understand the organization better and therefore will lead to increased productivity.Increase in loyalty One of the primary objectives of most HR departments today is to decrease employee attrition. Upskilling through training is a great way to do that because it shows employees that their employer is willing to invest in them.But whats the best way to go about enabling corporate training for your employees? Unless you have a full-fledged LD (Learning and Development) department in-house, it makes sense to seek the right external partner who can provide quality learning that reaches all your employees efficiently. Also, the only way you will be able to provide learning to your employees at scale without hampering regular work is through an online learning partner. Here are some important factors to keep in mind when selecting the right partner:The Right Breadth Depth of CoursesThe partner you choose should be able to offer all the courses that you want your employees to learn. But thats not enough. The courses on offer should also have the right depth to be truly useful to your organization and employees. Its easy to find partners who will issue certificates but you should seek out someone who actually helps your employees learn and grow. (Edureka offers over 100 courses in trending technologies like AI, Big Data, Data Science, Business Intellig ence and Cloud Computing. Each course can also span up to over 200 hours of interactive learning).Course Completion RateOne of the biggest issues with online learning is that very few learners actually complete their courses. Sometimes that number reaches as low as 15%! Thats why its important that you select a partner who can promise a high course completion rate to ensure ROI on your investment and proper learning for your employees. (Edureka has the highest global course completion rate- 80%, in the industry. Edureka maintains this rate by ensuring that learning sessions are engaging and that learners get all the necessary post-class support and encouragement to ensure their continued participation).Instructor QualityThe heart of any learning program is the instructor responsible for actually teaching the course. The instructor is accountable for not only the quality of learning but also to make certain that learners are consistently engaged and interested. You should ensure tha t the instructors that work with your employees are rated highly by other learners and come with practical experience in their subjects. (Edurekas cadre of instructors are all experienced industry professionals who are consistently rated and reviewed highly by their learners). Interactivity Focus on Practical LearningThe only way to guarantee that learners retain what they are being taught is to make every learning session an interactive one. That means learners should be able to interact with the instructor and ask questions whenever they want. Therefore, the learning partner you pick should offer interactive learning sessions and not just recorded videos. Another important thing to keep in mind is the practical application of whats being learnt. Its not ideal if the learner only understands the concepts theoretically but cannot apply them in a real-world environment. The learning program you choose should have a solution for that as well. (Edureka is a pioneer of live-instruct or led courses that also include real-world industry projects. That means every live Edureka course consists of real-time classes where learners get the opportunity to interact with the instructor and use what they have learnt to solve real-life industry problems. Edureka learners also get exclusive access to a forum where they can interact with other learners). Confused in Selecting a Right Corporate Partner? Take a Look After-Course SupportLearning doesnt need to be restricted only to the actual duration of the course. Learners can have questions at any time, even if its months after the course ended. You should confirm if the learning partner you are looking at offers support to learners long after the course is over. (Edureka offers 247 lifetime support to its learners. That means even after the course is over, not only do learners retain access to all their learning material but they also have access to support from subject matter experts on the courses they studied).Customiz ation The learning program you pick should be tuned to your business needs. That means you should be able to pick and choose elements from different courses and create a curriculum that not only helps your employees upskill but also provides returns for your organization. (Edureka provides comprehensive content customization options for its corporate partners. Apart from content, partners are also free to choose locations, mode of learning and dates as per their convenience).CertificationsFor them to see the true value of the learning program, your employees need to receive certificates on completing their courses. The certificates themselves also need to have intrinsic value which means they should be industry recognized and awarded based on a fair evaluation.(Edurekascourse-completion certificates are widely recognizedin the industry and are also verifiable by all employees. We only award certificates based on a strict evaluation process).Get in TouchAre you looking for a learni ng partner to help your employees? What to Do (And Not Do) After Making a Mistake at Work - Walrath Recruiting, Inc.

What to Do (And Not Do) After Making a Mistake at Work - Walrath Recruiting, Inc. Making a mistake at work is inevitable. Whether it’s because of burnout, lack of attention, misinformation, being under-qualified, etc. But what do you do after making the mistake without making it worse? We’re sharing 6 tips, here. Allow Yourself to Feel Bad After making a mistake at work, the natural immediate reaction is to feel disappointed, embarrassed or frustrated. And this is completely normal and totally fine! Its important to acknowledge how you feel, especially if it was an honest mistake that was made. However, avoid letting this feeling fester. Allow yourself to experience the emotions, and then switch gears; like acknowledging the mistake and developing a solution. Acknowledge the Mistake The next step after making a mistake is acknowledging it, and addressing it. If you try to brush it under the rug or wait until someone else acknowledges it the situation could get worse. By owning up to the mistake and apologizing (if necessary) to the appropriate party, you display proactiveness and responsibility. In addition, the sooner you express the issue â€" the less time you allow yourself to stress and worry. Consider the Worst-Case- Scenario Oftentimes when we make a mistake, our minds tend to exaggerate the situation. When this happens, analyze what the actual worst-case scenario could be and then let it go. For example, if the worst thing that will happen is you get fired, you can use it as a learning opportunity and (you guessed it) find another job. However, if this is an outlier situation and you usually do great work â€" you may just have a discussion with your manager on how to find a solution to the problem to avoid it from happening in the future. Forgive Yourself Once you’ve acknowledged the mistake and came up with a solution to fix it forgive yourself and let it go. Letting the negative feelings linger only affects your future performance. Remind yourself that mistakes happen, you’ve come up with a solution, and you’re moving on. Redeem Yourself (Cautiously) One of the best ways to build trust and reliability is by consistently showing up, and delivering. If you are constantly doing great work, following through and sticking to your commitments, then when there are mistakes that occur- the consequences arent as critical. Doing great work holds a lot of weight, so remember this for the future. Consider it a Learning Opportunity “As long as they are well-intentioned, mistakes are not a matter for shame, but for learning”. â€"Margaret Heffernan. When mistakes happen, one of the best ways to turn it into a positive is to find the learning opportunity.  In doing this you learn how to avoid making the mistake in the future, learning how or why it happened, and also setting an example in the workplace for other people in the office to avoid making that mistake themselves as well. How have you come back from making a mistake at work?

Common grammar mistakes to avoid on your CV

Common grammar mistakes to avoid on your CV by Michael Cheary Let’s face it, first impressions count…And when it comes to a job application, a well-written and mistake free CV is vital if you want to sell yourself effectively. In other words, even the person reading it isn’t quite as pedantic about their punctuation â€" a missed apostrophe or simple spelling mistake can often spell the end of your chances.To help you stand out for all the right reasons, here’s how to tackle the most common (and all-too-often glaring) grammatical errors:Your/You’reYour  â€" Relating to/owned by you (‘your blog’, ‘your job’, ‘your delightful suburban semi-detached abode’).You’re  â€" You are.When it comes to the commonly confused ‘your’ and ‘you’re’, think before you write.Even if you’re fully aware of how they differ, writing at speed can often cause you to miss of letters by accident. And unfortunately, most spellcheckers won’t underline ‘your’ as a misspelled word â€" even if it’s used in th e wrong context.Possible CV Example:Thank you for  your  consideration.I am aware that  you’re  currently looking to fill the position of Sales Associate.  What not to do on your CV  Its/It’sIts  â€"  Not  it is.It’s  â€" It is.When reading back over  your  (see what we did there?) CV, always check your apostrophes, especially when it comes to the its/it’s rule.The simplest test is to read the sentence out loud, replacing both uses with ‘it is’ as you read.If it makes no sense, it definitely doesn’t need an apostrophe.Possible CV Example:When the company reviewed  its  social media strategy, the changes I instigated had a positive impact.I enjoy correcting people’s spelling mistakes.  It’s  something that gives me a great sense of superiority.What recruiters are really looking for in your CVThere/Their/They’reThere  â€" Used when referring to a place or object (whether physical or abstract).Their  â€" When something belongs to  them.They’re  â€" They are.The t here/their/they’re paradox is probably the most common grammatical issue to go against a candidate’s CV. Basically, as there are three possible options, there are two other ways of getting it wrong (motivational speech on standby).If you’re not sure of this rule, learn it. It  will  come up daily.Possible CV Example:Whilst working  there, I learned a lot.Unfortunately,  their  decision to downsize meant that I lost my job.They’re  really going to regret that decision. Trust me.  Affect/EffectAffect  â€" To influence somethingEffect  â€" The result of somethingThe  majority  of the time, affect is used as a verb, and effect as a noun although it’s worth noting that effect can sometimes be used as a verb.However, as opposed to the pesky ‘i before e, except after c’ rule (don’t even get us started), most of the time this one sticks.Possible CV Example:Taking a Project Management course had a major  effect  on my productivity levels.Taking a PRINCE2 ® course is positive ly  affecting  my time management skills and knowledge of key project management practices.      Other grammatical errors to avoid:  loose/lose, learned/learnt, im/I’m, i.e./e.g., to/too, LOLZ  Final thoughtsDon’t rush it. A day spent on your CV is better than six months of waiting for a reply.Never rely solely on spellcheck. Although it will pick up some errors, it often misses certain grammatical mistakes.Make sure you’re reading your CV thoroughly, focusing on grammar, spelling, and punctuation. A quick skim read might feel like enough, but it won’t allow you to spot small mistakes.Always get someone to proofread your CV when you’ve finished. Something which makes sense to you may not make sense to the person reading it.If in doubt, avoid abbreviations in general. Not only will you cut down on mistakes, you’ll also come across more professional.What words should I use on my CV?How to write a CVNeed more CV advice?It takes an employer just seven seconds to save or reje ct a job applicant’s CV. The Year of Future Nostalgia Female Trends to WATCH for 2016

The Year of Future Nostalgia Female Trends to WATCH for 2016 If you are keen on buying your other half a stylish new watch this Valentines, you first need to understand two key considerations. The first relates to your partner’s personality sense of style and demeanour which will influence the accessories that they use to accentuate their outfits. On top of this, you will also need to understand the watch design trends that are likely to take over in 2016, to make sure they fit in, yet stand out from the crowd this year. 3 Key Female Watch design Trends in 2016 With this in mind, here are three seminal watch design trends to look out for in 2016. Embrace the Pastel Parade As anyone who has seen the ladies Marc Jacobs watch range for 2016 can testify, the emergence of pastel coloured watch straps and accents is all the rage. From pale pinks to pallid yellow and duck egg blue, these soft shades offer a considerable diversity of colour and help consumers to accessorise their wardrobe more effectively. This trend will only gather momentum in the months ahead, as users demand brighter tones and a wider diversity of colour. This is perfect for the female market, where pastel coloured garments are also becoming increasingly popular. Consider the Importance of Interchangeable Bands Make no mistake; interchangeable bands are here to stay in the watch market. While these are diametrically opposed to the type of steel bands historically used on high-end watches, the advent of modular smartwatches has popularised interchangeable bands and encouraged traditional manufacturers to incorporate them. These bands also offer considerable diversity and cost-effectiveness to consumers, as they can utilise a number of variable options throughout the year without compromising on their budget or the aesthetic appeal of their attire. Herald the Return of 1970’s Nostalgia As a savvy consumer, you may well have noticed that there is something of a 1970’s revival taking place in the contemporary fashion market. This can easily be applied to modern-day watches, many of which feature brightly coloured and striped straps that hark back to a less restrictive age. Particularly popular on female watches, these bold and beautiful timepieces are iconic in their design, and enable fashion-conscious consumers to add to their ensemble in a relevant and nostalgic manner. There is a diverse array of colours available in today’s striped watches too, so you can also select a 70’s inspired watch that suits your existing wardrobe.
